Gold leaf applied by hand behaves in a way no gold-coloured paint can match, and on a frame this size the difference is impossible to miss.

Leaf is beaten to a few microns thick and laid in overlapping sheets, so it settles into every hollow of the carved mahogany and thins very slightly across raised edges. The antiquing then works into those high points, producing a surface that grades between bright and shadowed exactly as decades of handling would. A sprayed finish is uniform by definition and always reads as new; this does not. Plywood and iron support the mahogany behind.

Place it above a console, a fireplace or a dressing table where the leaf can catch lamplight.
