A chandelier that's too small gets swallowed by the room; one that's too big overwhelms it. The good news: designers size chandeliers with a few simple formulas, and they work in almost every home. Here's exactly how to get the diameter, hanging height, and scale right — for dining rooms, foyers, bedrooms, and everything in between.
The basic formula: room size to chandelier diameter
For a chandelier lighting a whole room, add the room's length and width in feet — that number, in inches, is your target diameter.
Example: a 12' x 14' living room → 12 + 14 = 26 → look for a chandelier roughly 26" in diameter. The Roundout 9 Light Chandelier measures exactly 26" across, if you want to see what that looks like in the room.
This is a starting point, not a law. Rooms with tall ceilings, bold architecture, or minimal furniture can handle going a size up. When in doubt between two sizes, most designers choose the larger — an ambitious chandelier reads as intentional; an undersized one reads as a mistake.
Sizing over a dining table
Over a table, the table — not the room — sets the size. Two rules:
- Diameter: one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. For a 42" wide table, that's a fixture roughly 21"–28" across.
- Length (for linear chandeliers): one-third to one-half the table's length, and never longer than the table minus 12" on each end. A 72" table pairs well with a 24"–36" linear fixture.
Longer tables scale up from there — the Averitt Linear Chandelier runs 42", which sits in the one-third-to-one-half band for tables from about 84" to 126".
How high to hang it
- Over a dining table: 30"–36" from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture with an 8-foot ceiling. Add about 3" of height for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet.
- In open rooms and hallways: keep at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor to the fixture's lowest point — 7'6" is more comfortable where people pass directly underneath.
- In a two-story foyer: if there's a window above the front door, center the chandelier so it's visible through the window from outside. As a rule, the bottom of the fixture should hang no lower than the second-floor line.
Foyer sizing
The length-plus-width formula works here too, but ceiling height matters more. For two-story foyers, choose a multi-tier or elongated design — a fixture 2 to 3 feet tall or more — so it holds its own in the vertical space. Can a chandelier be too big? Yes, but it's rarer than too small. If the fixture's diameter approaches the width of your table, or people risk brushing it, size down.
