Bathroom Vanity Lighting: Placement, Size, and What Flatters

Vanity lighting is where people meet their reflection every morning — and most bathrooms get it wrong with a single overhead fixture that casts shadows exactly where you don't want them.

Here's how designers light a vanity: placement first, then size, then light quality.

Placement

Light the face, not the ceiling

Sconces at eye level
60″–66″ up, 36″–40″ apart

Light reaches the face from both sides, and the shadows cancel out.

Shadows come from light arriving at the wrong angle. The most flattering setup is a sconce on each side of the mirror at eye level. The practical standards:

  • Side sconces: centered roughly 60″–66″ from the floor, placed 36″–40″ apart — usually just beyond the mirror's edges. A slim fixture like the Zire 1-Light Bath Sconce — 4.4″ wide — sits beside a mirror without crowding it. Buy two.
  • Bath bar above the mirror: the workable second choice when side placement won't fit. Mount it roughly 75″–80″ from the floor, centered over the mirror.
  • Best of both: larger bathrooms often combine an overhead bar for fill with sconces for the face.

Proportion

Sizing the fixture to the vanity

Vanity width Recommended approach

The proportional rule for a bar above the mirror: aim for about 75% of the mirror's width, and never wider than the vanity itself. On a 60″–72″ double vanity, two narrower bars — one centered over each mirror — usually read better than one long fixture stretched across both. The part most people skip

Light quality

  • Color temperature: 2700K–3000K. Warm white flatters skin; cool blue-white light belongs in garages. Whatever you pick, use it in every bulb in the room.
  • Brightness: plan for roughly 1,500–2,200 total lumens at the vanity of an average bath — dimmable, because the same room serves 6 a.m. and midnight.
  • CRI 90+: high color rendering matters most where makeup happens. Most quality LED fixtures now meet it — check the spec.
  • Damp rating: fixtures over a vanity or near a shower should be damp-rated. Everything in our vanity lighting collection is specified for bathroom use.

Frequently asked questions

Can sconces hang lower than the mirror top?

Yes — sconces overlapping the mirror's edges is a designer look, as long as centers stay near eye level.

Up-light or down-light bath bars?

Up-lights bounce softer, indirect light; down-lights are brighter on the counter but harsher on the face. Diffused shades — frosted or opal glass — win either way.

Does the finish need to match my faucet?

Relating beats matching: brass lighting over chrome plumbing works if repeated elsewhere — mirror frame, hardware. Two finishes maximum.
