Furniture Sizing and Spacing: Tables, Consoles, Mirrors, and Nightstands

Most rooms that feel "off" aren't badly furnished — the pieces are just the wrong size for each other. A coffee table that's too short, a mirror that's too narrow, a dining table that leaves no room to pull out a chair.

These are the proportions designers use to size furniture to the room and to each other.

Living room

Coffee tables

Coffee table ≈ ⅔
the length of the sofa

An 84″ sofa → a coffee table about 56″ long.

  • Distance from the sofa: 14″–18″ — close enough to reach a drink, far enough to walk past.
  • Height: about level with the sofa seat, or an inch or two lower.
  • Walkways: leave 30″–36″ for main paths through the room.
Plan view of an 84-inch sofa with a 56-inch coffee table placed 14 to 18 inches in front of it.
An 84″ sofa with a coffee table about two-thirds its length, 14″–18″ away.

The Reid Coffee Table (57″), Jinx Rectangular Coffee Table (56″), and Floating Coffee Table (55″) all fit an 84″ sofa. See all coffee tables.

Dining room

Dining tables and chairs

  • Seating: allow about 24″ of table edge per person. A 72″ rectangular table seats six; a 96″ table seats eight.
  • Clearance: leave at least 36″ from the table edge to the wall or nearest furniture so chairs can pull out — 42″–48″ where people walk behind seated guests.
  • Room size: add those clearances to both sides. A 72″ table needs a room about 12′ long; a 96″ table about 14′.
  • Chairs: standard tables are about 30″ high; chair seats at 16″–18″ leave comfortable leg room.

The Tristan Dining Table and Amboss Dining Table are 72″; the Serenity Dining Table and Andrade Dining Table are 96″. To size the light over the table, see sizing over a dining table in our chandelier guide.

Consoles, sideboards, and the mirror above

  • Console height: typically 28″–32″, a comfortable height to drop keys or display a lamp.
  • Mirror or art width: about ⅔ to ¾ the width of the furniture below it. A 60″ console takes a mirror around 40″–45″ wide.
  • The gap: hang the mirror or art 6″–10″ above the top of the furniture, so the two read as one arrangement.
A 40-inch mirror hung 6 to 10 inches above a 60-inch console table that is 28 to 32 inches tall.
A mirror about two-thirds the console's width, hung 6″–10″ above it.

For example, the Oliver Console (60″) pairs with the Mercury Mirror (39″). On a longer sideboard like the Eglinton Sideboard (79″), the same ⅔ rule calls for a mirror or art of about 52″–60″. Browse console tables and mirrors; for lamps on a console, see the lamp guide.

Bedroom

Nightstands

  • Height: about level with the top of the mattress — usually 24″–28″.
  • Width: wide enough for a lamp plus a book and a glass, and in proportion to the bed — larger beds can take wider nightstands.
  • Spacing: a few inches between the nightstand and the bed frame keeps sheets from catching.

The Dimitrios Nightstand (24″) and Quad Block Bedside Table (26″) cover the standard range. See all nightstands.

Rugs

Sizing the rug under it all

  • Living room: large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it, with about 12″–18″ of floor showing around the edges.
  • Dining room: the rug should extend far enough past the table that chairs stay on it when pulled out — roughly 24″ beyond each edge.
