The weight is in the base. A swivel mechanism carrying a chair this broad needs a substantial counterweight, or it tips when someone sits on the front edge; an oak veneer base of this scale provides that mass while looking like furniture rather than engineering. The practical consequence is that once positioned, this chair stays where it is put - moving it is a two-person job.

What that buys is a genuinely generous seat: 34.65 inches wide of the chair's 37.60 total, so almost the entire width is usable, with a 27.56 inch depth to sit fully back into.
