Putting clear glass over a sculptural metal base means the base is permanently on display, which raises the standard the casting has to meet.

On a solid-topped table the structure beneath goes largely unseen and can be purely functional. Here the cast aluminium form is visible through the top from every angle, so it has to work as an object in its own right rather than merely holding the glass up. The bronze finish gives that metal warmth and lets the highlights and shadows of the casting read clearly through the glass above. Tempered glass just under two-thirds of an inch thick provides the surface without visual weight.

At 13.58 inches high with a 40.16 inch diameter, the Cambronne is a full-size round coffee table that occupies its floor space without blocking sightlines, which is precisely what glass buys in a smaller room. Keep the surface sparse so the base below stays visible.
