Founder & accessories editor for Mademoiselle, Kate Spade designed a fashionable utilitarian handbag out of samples of construction paper, combining sleek shapes & colorful palettes & debuted six versions of a bag called Sam.

Since 1993 the firm Kate Spade New York has grown from the original 6 handbags to a global style house with handbags, clothes, lighting, home decor & other accessories.  The firm values thoughtful details with a sophistication of color that makes a personal style statement for their clients.  

Kate Spade New York in 2017 became part of the Tapestry house of brands.  Designer & Founder Kate Spade passed away in 2018.
