Hang the bottom of a pendant 30 to 36 inches above a kitchen island, countertop or dining table. Over a bathroom vanity, the bottom should sit around 60 inches off the floor so it lights the mirror without blocking your view. In open rooms with taller ceilings, raise the lighting fixture proportionally so it stays in scale with the space.

A pendant light hangs from a single cord, chain or rod and usually holds one light or a small cluster of lights. On the other hand, a chandelier is larger, uses multiple arms or tiers and works as a single statement piece. Pendants are often used in groups of two or three over islands and dining tables, while chandeliers anchor a room on their own.

Kitchens typically pair well with dome, cone and glass pendants that light the space without excessive visual clutter. Dining rooms can carry larger or more decorative styles since the pendant becomes part of the room's aesthetic personality. Bathrooms look best with smaller-scale glass or globe pendants, and you'll want to confirm the fixture is rated for damp locations before installing over a tub or near a shower.

Your pendant finish doesn't need to match every other metal in the room exactly, but the overall visual consistency should feel intentional. Pick one dominant finish for the largest metal elements (usually the faucet and cabinet hardware) and let the pendant either match that finish or play a supporting role with a complementary tone. Mixed metals work beautifully when you repeat each finish at least twice in the space, so a brass pendant pairs well with brass cabinet pulls and a brass accent on the range hood. Warm metals like brass, bronze and copper can soften a room, while cool metals like polished nickel, chrome and matte black add crispness and contrast that can sharpen any space. Use a 60-30-10 ratio for balance, ensuring mixed metals, such as warm brass and cool matte black, have enough contrast to look deliberate and cohesive.
