Adventures in becoming an Accidental Design Addict - Episode 1: So, you’ve found yourself in a new home?

Posted by RM on Apr 2nd 2021

When I was a young woman, my fiance, now husband, and I moved into a home that was roughly double the size of any home I’d ever grown up in.  My parents were never much for home decor - there was nary a print on the walls - all of which were the same shade of eggshell white.  Few knick knacks or family heirlooms graced the sparse shelves.  Furniture pieces were rarely selected with the thought of “How will this mesh with my existing furniture,” because there were so few pieces that needed to mesh.  So, when I walked through the doors of our first condo, I had no idea that I’d revel in picking out color samples in the paint aisle; I would flex my finger muscles in understanding textures; I would scour design magazines and imbed in my mind the differences between a rolled-arm tufted chesterfield sofa and the more simple modern take on that classic.  So many Sunday afternoons would be spent at flea markets, thrift shops, and antique shops hunting for some trinket that would fill a space that I had designed in my mind for our guest bathroom.  Stores like HomeGoods and AtHome would become my mecca.  I would start to talk about style in ways that had nothing to do with music, movies, or the latest pair of jeans I’d found.  And I certainly never thought of how much I would come to appreciate lighting as much as I have.

After walking through the door to that brand new condo, I noticed one thing right away.  Where were the ceiling fans? Though my parents’ tiny home may have lacked cohesive style - there was one thing that it always had an abundance of - comfort. And perhaps the least appreciated avenues to ensuring comfort in the home can be found in the humble ceiling fan. When you just need to feel a slight breeze on your face, maybe after you’ve been busy playing with your kids - the ceiling fan is always there to feed that need. Or perhaps, your AC is out and it feels like you’re ten feet from the surface of the sun - in that moment you’ll never be more grateful for a ceiling fan . And just maybe - though I’m not speaking from experience here - maybe you’re living on your own for the first time, and you’ve decided to prepare your partner your first home-cooked meal, and though diligent, you’ve burned every single ingredient and the smell of your culinary crimes runs through the halls of your new abode and has even the neighbors wondering what expletive Gordon Ramsay might be calling you at that very moment - you’ll never be happier to have a ceiling fan to clear the air!

But - ceiling fans don’t have to simply be relegated to the background.  Why not make your ceiling fan the star, the showcase, of any room.  Now, 13-years after moving in with my husband, we have moved into our third home together, one that I’m actively working on decorating, and a ceiling fan became the catalyst for every single design decision that has followed.

Are you looking for a few suggestions for top-quality, on-trend ceiling fans?  Well, continue to read below to see just a handful of the inspiring selections available from Lighting Reimagined:

  • Does your home just scream sleek and modern?  Then this sleek 60’’ three blade fan from Minka -Aire will fit your decor perfectly!  The blades and housing are made in an ultra-modern coal finish.  The 16w LED bulb will provide hundreds of hours of energy-efficient illumination that will please your eyes and your pocket-book!
  • Love the look, but maybe black on black finishes aren’t what you had in mind?  Try this stunner from Fanimation, the Kwad 52" Ceiling Fan.   A brushed nickel housing leads to an 18-watt LED light encased in an opal glass fixture.  The four reversible blades are so versatile in both black and brushed nickel finish.  This fan isn’t just smart looking - it’s also smart enabled!  When you purchase the wi-fi receiver (sold separately) this fan can be controlled right from your smartphone!

  • If you’re like me, one of my absolute favorite periods of interior design is MCM. But, if you’re also like me, Contemporary looks also hold a special place in your heart.  If that sounds like you, the Maverick 60" Fan from Monte Carlo will have you feeling both vibes in a whole new way.  This 60’’ fan features Brushed Steel and a variety of blade options, though my favorite is the Walnut blades as shown here.  The unique silhouette of this fan makes me yearn to sit in an Eames-style chair, sipping a Rob Roy, listening to a little Sinatra on the turntable.

  • Can you relate to the combination of steel and dark wood, but you’re looking for a more straightforward modern design?  If so, then the Rudolph 52’’ ceiling fan from Minka-Aire will fit the bill.  The 3 maple blades and the brushed nickel housing and downrod are the perfect combination to suit any room in your home.

  • Are you looking to add a ceiling fan to your home, but maybe you’re concerned about exposed blades?  Or, maybe you just want a fan that is a little outside of the box?  Then an enclosed ceiling fan is exactly what you’re looking for! The Beckwith 13’’ Fan from Fanimation has enclosed blades, ultra-modern style, with LED lights under white frosted glass panels.  Fanimation offers this contemporary fan in two on-trend finishes:  Oil Rubbed Bronze or Brushed Nickel.
